English

The English Australian Curriculum Area is organised into three interrelated strands that support student's growing understanding and use of Standard Australian English.  Together the three strands focus on developing student's knowledge, understanding and skills in listening reading, viewing, speaking and writing.  The three strands are:

  • LANGUAGE: knowing about the English language
  • LITERATURE: understanding, appreciating , responding to, analysing and creating literature
  • LITERACY: expanding the repertoire of English usage.

English at St Joseph's is taught through a combination of explicit English lessons (including guided reading, grammar lessons, spelling programs) and opportunities that arise through other subject areas and other learning experiences.

As a part of the English program at St Joseph's, students will engage with a variety of texts.  They will listen to, read and view spoken, written and multimodal texts including traditional oral texts, picture books, rhyming verse, poetry, non-fiction, film, and dramatic performances. The primary purpose of some of these texts will be to entertain, for others they were designed to inform.
